The California Coalition Against Gambling Expansion has stepped into the fray over a proposal that would change the way horse races are bet on in California. The Sacramento-based, anti-booze, anti-betting religious lobby has promised to send 10,000 mailers in the next few days asking recipients to call or write Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger.

A bill that would allow exchange betting in California passed the Legislature on Thursday, officials said. The bill, sponsored by state Sen. Ron Calderon, D-Montebello, and a companion bill, sponsored by Assembly Speaker John Perez, D-Los Angeles, were each hailed by racing officials as strong measures protecting the future of California horse racing.
